Ronda is one of Andalucía's most beautiful towns, spectacularly situated, steeped in history, reputedly Hemingway's favourite city in all Spain.
The town itself, with a population of 35,000, is a delight, richly endowed with a heritage of magnificent buildings, it is one of the oldest cities in Spain.
Famous through Spain for two reasons, standing on a towering plateau, in the mountains of Málaga Province, it is most famous for the dramatic plunging river gorge with its magnificent bridge (puente nuevo) which divides the medieval (old) part of town from the 18th Century (modern) part.
Secondly their bullring, the Plaza de Toros, is claimed to be the oldest bullring in Spain. For many Rondeños, it is their spiritual home, where the rules of modern bullfighting were first laid down by Pedro Romero.
Ronda boasts many delightful and renown restaurants and bars and an amazing shopping street that seems to go on for miles. Housing both small independent shops and Spanish High Street shops. You can amble up the street take in some café and Churros or tapas and slowly enjoy the bustle of Spanish life.
It is indeed a very popular tourist destination amongst not only international tourist but the Spanish themselves. Although many travel far to this impressive and beautiful town by 2pm the town has usually said goodbye to the tourists and returned to its tranquil self.
Being the third most visited town in Spain, Ronda has not only a good selection of restaurants and bars but entertainment in the form of theatre, flamenco and opera.
Three natural parks are in close proximity, each of them offering a wealth of beauty, great hiking and other outdoor activities. Both La Sierra de Las Nieves and La Sierra de Grazalema have been declared Biosphere Reserves by UNESCO.
These craggy, limestone mountain regions, full of deep ravines, spectacular gorges and some of the world's deepest potholes, are extensively forested with rare Spanish fir. Home to one of the biggest populations of Spanish Ibex, here you will also find roe deer, wild cats, golden eagles, the owl and the otter, to name just a few. Los Alcornocales Natural Park is another very beautiful region and contains one of the most important and extensive cork oak forests in the world.
Here some of Spain's best hikes begin less than half an hour away by car. Mountain bikes can be hired and other local activities include ballooning, quad-biking and two riding schools located in the Tajo valley literally on the Farmhouse doorstep taking you on trails through the surrounding breathtaking landscape.
